History of Lighthouse
The earliest form of lighthouses was probably bonfires on the beach. The earliest known lighthouse was built in Egypt over 2,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found the remains of more than 30 lighthouses built by ancient Romans. The first British colonial lighthouse is located in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands cover a total area of 8,249 square kilometers. They have a total of 572 islands, out of which 38 are inhabited. There are nearly 50 Lighthouses in Andaman Island. In this blog, we will see the Top 5 of it.
Historic Lighthouses of Andaman Island
1. Indira Point Lighthouse
The 1972-built Indira Point Lighthouse is located at the southernmost point of Indian territory. Its 35 m tall round cast iron tower with red and white spiral stripes, features a 3rd order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse is accessible by road and marks an important landmark for ships bound for or from the Strait of Malacca. The station was severely affected by the 2004 tsunami, which swept away all structures except the lighthouse. Despite being left standing in the water, the Indian Coast Guard reactivated the lighthouse by the end of February 2005.
