About Kalipur Beach

Located near Kalipur Village, the beach offers a completely different experience compared to the white sandy beaches usually associated with the Andaman Islands.

Kalipur Beach is especially famous because four species of sea turtles, Olive Ridley, Green Turtle, Hawksbill, and Leatherback turtles, are known to nest here during the nesting season. The beach also has shallow reef areas, mangrove surroundings, and calm sections suitable for swimming and snorkelling during favourable sea conditions.

Unlike crowded tourist beaches in South Andaman, Kalipur Beach remains peaceful and less commercialised, making it popular among nature lovers, photographers, and travellers exploring Diglipur.

Things to Do in Kalipur Beach

Kalipur Beach is all about experiencing nature in its purest form. Turtle nesting, quiet shorelines, volcanic grey sand, calm waters, and the untouched beauty of North Andaman make it one of the most unique beaches to visit while exploring Diglipur.

Witness Turtle Nesting

Kalipur Beach is one of the very few places in India where four species of sea turtles are known to nest. During nesting season, visitors can often notice protected nesting zones and nets placed by the forest department near the beach.

The government also runs hatchery and conservation programs here, where baby turtles are sometimes released back into the sea during early mornings. Travellers interested in turtle conservation activities can occasionally find volunteering or visitor information through official forest department updates.

Since turtle activity is seasonal and nature-dependent, sightings are never guaranteed.

Swimming at Kalipur Beach

Early mornings are usually the best time for swimming at Kalipur Beach, when the sea remains calmer and clearer. Compared to many crowded beaches in South Andaman, the beach feels raw, peaceful, and far less commercialised.

Basic facilities like changing rooms, freshwater showers, and toilets are available near the beach area. While the facilities are simple, they are fairly decent considering the remote location of Diglipur.

Visitors should still stay cautious about changing tides, jellyfish presence, and rocky coral patches in some sections.

Visit Craggy Island

Craggy Island is one of the best offbeat snorkelling spots around Kalipur Beach and is popular among adventure travellers visiting Diglipur.

There are two ways to reach Craggy Island:

  • If you are a professional swimmer and have buddies along, you can swim to Craggy Island from Kalipur Beach during suitable tide conditions. The swim usually takes around 20 minutes and the route itself offers a good snorkelling experience with reef patches, colourful fish, and clear water. Flippers and proper snorkelling gear are highly recommended. However, this is not considered the safest option due to jellyfish presence, changing tides, and sea currents.

  • The safer and easier option is hiring a small motor boat from Aerial Bay Jetty, which usually costs around ₹4,000 depending on the season and group size. You can reach Craggy Island comfortably, snorkel around the reef areas, and return back by boat.

The waters around Craggy Island usually offer good underwater visibility during calm sea conditions. Carrying your own snorkelling gear is highly recommended, as rental options in Diglipur are very limited.

Stay Near the Beach

Kalipur Beach has a few peaceful resorts and stays nearby, making it a good base for travellers exploring Ross and Smith Islands, Saddle Peak, and other attractions around Diglipur.

Popular stays near Kalipur Beach include places like Pristine Beach Resort and Turtle Resort, both known for their quiet surroundings and proximity to the beach. The area is especially suitable for travellers looking for a slower and more nature-focused North Andaman experience.
